Tour: Amritsar & Himachal
Date: 14 - 28 Jun 2020
Duration: 15 Days
A 15 day tour starting with a morning visit to the iconic Golden Temple in Amritsar, before exploring the older parts of the city followed by a trip to a traditional farm stead. From here we head east to McLeod Ganj, the home of the Dalai Lama, where we will experience the daily life of monks as they dash between classes, followed by a day visiting local villages of the Gaddi people who were once shepherding nomads. We then drive east through the brown and mauve cold desert landscape of Spiti Valley (similar to the Altai mountain region of Mongolia). During our time in Spiti we will trek to a 150 foot waterfall, camp overnight at a glacial lake under unpolluted star filled skies, visit the highest inhabited village in Asia, marvel at an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery perched atop a 300 ft jagged rock and an even older monastery of cubic mud construction, not dissimilar to a Star Wars movie set. From the earth tones of Spiti, we loop through the Rohtang Pass, which is only open for a few months mid-year and will take us through the lush green valley of Kinnaur, famous for its apple orchards and green velvet hats worn by the locals. Here we will head down the Sangla valley and soak up village life in a more verdant terrain, before ending our tour at Chandigarh airport. Please note that this tour does include visiting high altitude region, if your have been trekking or skiing previously at high altitudes then it is likely your body will adapt naturally, if you haven't been at high altitudes before and you'd like to learn more email in a message for further info. Please also note this tour is off the beaten track in places, so accommodation is basic, but to a good standard near the airport at the start and end of the tour, and with in the larger towns.
