Tour: Amritsar & Himachal Pradesh

incl. Golden Temple, Himalayan cold desert mountain landscapes & lush valleys.

Date: 15 - 29 Jun 2018

Summary: A 15 day tour starting at the iconic Golden Temple in Amritsar, where we will visit the temple at both sunrise and sunset, giving us plenty of opportunity to photograph it during the best light, whilst exploring the old parts of the city. From here we head east to McLeod Ganj, the home of the Dalai Lama, where we will experience the daily life of monks as they dash between classes, followed by a day visiting local villages of the Gaddi people who were once shepherding nomads. We then drive east through the brown and mauve cold desert landscape of Spiti Valley (similar to the Altai mountain region of Mongolia). During our time in Spiti we will trek to a 150 foot waterfall, camp overnight at a glacial lake under unpolluted star filled skies, visit the highest inhabited village in Asia, marvel at an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery perched atop a 300 ft jagged rock and an even older monastery of  cubic mud construction, not dissimilar to a Star Wars movie set. From the earth tones of Spiti, we loop through the Rohtang Pass, which is only open for a few months mid-year and will take us through the lush green valley of Kinnaur, famous for its apple orchards and green velvet hats worn by the locals. Here we will head down the Sangla valley and soak up village life in a more verdant terrain, before ending our tour at Chandigarh airport. Please note that due to the high altitude of this region, this tour can be demanding on the physical body. If you have not been skiing or trekking at high altitude before, we advise you read up on the possible side effects by clicking here. However we'd like to relay that the local team we are liaising with, has many years experience of running groups in this region and has communicated it is extremely rare to experience the severe symptoms of altitude sickness.  This tour is off the beaten track, so accommodation is basic within the remote regions of the valleys, but to a good standard near the airport at the start and end of the tour. If this sounds like your kind of tour and you would like to read a more detailed itinerary click on the itinerary button below.

This will give you the security of knowing your tour will proceed and take advantage of the opportunity of having a unique experience, without paying the usual premium that a 1:1 or 2:1 tour would command.
