Tour Summary

A 15 day tour starting on the banks of the  Brahmaputra River and meandering south to take in the lush green forests of Meghalaya, interspersed with the awe rendering 1115 foot sheer drop Nohkalikai and the serenely beautiful Krang Suri Waterfalls. Whilst waterfall tracking we will journey into the forest to witness a marvel of man and nature in the form of a double decker living root bridge, formed by locals by training the aerial roots of rubber trees to grow through betel tree trunks that are placed across rivers in the region. The process can take up to 15 years, but it is thought the bridges can last up to 100 years as a self renewing living bridge, so long as the trees involved remain healthy.  From here we will head north east for a safari ride atop elephants in the mighty Kaziranga wildlife park, home to the largest population of the one horned rhino.  We will then journey east to Jorhat to visit some of the oldest tea estates in the region, whilst learning the process of harvesting tea, now during this time the harvesting season has usually come to an end, but we felt it was important to visit the area during the tribal Hornbill festival and when Kaziranga park is open (it is closed during monsoon season). Following our visit to tea estates we take a morning walk through a Gibbon Sanctuary, before driving south into Nagaland and the tribal war cries, drumming and dance that is the Hornbill festival.
